Fudge and faith.

Mason and I have been reading a book together for a couple of months now.

It's one that I read when I was a little girl, and also one that his sisters have already read.

Double Fudge by Judy Blume

When it's almost time to tuck him into bed, we get out the book, and each take a turn reading a page. He reads a page, then I read a page...and so on and so on.

It has helped him alot with his reading, and it gives me some special time to spend with him. It's a win-win situation if you ask me.

Last night, we read chapter 6.

The title of the chapter was "Money".

The main character in the book, Fudge, is obsessed with money.

He wants to be a miser and buy the entire world someday.

Interesting.

Mind you...he's only a kindergartener, but money is his favorite thing.

Go figure...

After having to meet with the school counselor about Fudge and all his "miser" talk, his mother became very concerned about Fudge and his obsession with money, so she decided to talk to her older son, who was a junior high student.

She asked him, "Peter, I've been wondering...have Dad and I taught you that the best things in life are free...like good health and love and friendship? That's what we stress in our family, isn't it?"

"Yeah, Mom...sure." he replied.

"And you understand that no matter how much money you have you aren't necessarily happy? You know that, don't you Peter?" she asked him.

"Sure, Mom. I know that." he said.

Mmmm? My wheels began to spin.

We finished our chapter, held hands and said his prayers.

I looked at Mason and asked him, "Mase, do you know that the best things in life are free?"

He looked at me and said, "Yeh Mom."

Before I had a chance to respond, he said, "I know that our family is free and our love is free."

"Yes, you're right." I said.

"I know one more thing that is free, that he didn't say Mom," he said playing with my hair.

"Oh yeh, what's that?" I asked.

"Faith is free." He said with confidence.

I teared up. Kissed him on the forehead and said, "Man, you are the smartest 8 year old I know."

Gosh how I love that kid!

FAITH is free.

FAITH.

It's free!

Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Luke 17:5 Jesus replied, "If you have faith as smal as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea' and it will obey you."
