What's your name?

Psalm 16:11
Thou wilt make known to me the path of life;
In Thy presence is fulness of JOY;
In Thy right hand there are pleasures forever.

My children and I participated in a service project for our
Homeschool group the week of Valentine's Day.

We made handmade Valentines cards and handed them out to the elderly residents at a local nursing home.

We went room to room handing out our little love notes and visiting with them.

I'm happy to say that my kids really enjoyed it.

But most of all...the residents were tickled that we took our time to pour some love on them.

Their faces lit up when they saw the children, and even more when they saw their Valentine cards.

There were many rooms to cover, so our homeschool group split up and each took a hallway.

My two children and I walked up and down the hallway making sure we did not miss anyone.

We approached a room that was lit up bright, but very quiet.

There was a woman lying in a bed near the window with her face towards the wall.

As we walked in, I announced us with a "hello", but she never turned to see who we were.

We walked on the opposite side of her bed, near the window, when I realized that she could not move her neck to greet us.

She was paralyzed in one position with her face looking towards the wall.

My heart broke for her.

I bent down close to her so she could see me, then told her why we were there and showed her the Valentines card we had for her.

She grinned a huge grin and said "thank you", then asked if my two children would come close to her so she could see them.

Her face radiated.
Her skin was flawless, a soft pasty white.
And she had the bluest eyes.
They looked transparent, and glistened like the ocean.

I bent close to her once more, so she could see my face, and then I asked her,
"What's your name?"

She responded,
"Joyce. My name is Joyce."

I answered back,
"Well that's a beatiful name. It's a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Joyce."

She smiled a big smile and said,
"It's nice to meet you.  What's your name?"

And before I could answer her question, she says excitedly,
"Your name is Joy."

I responded back,
"No ma'am. My name is Tammy."

She looked at me intently and repeated,
"Your name is Joy."

I giggled and said back to her,
"Well thank you, but my name is Tammy."

She said back to me,
"No, your name is Joy."

To which I gave in and said,
"Okay. I'll take the name Joy, if that's what you want to call me."

She smiled looking pleased at my response and said,
"Yes. Tammy Joy. That is your name. You are Joy."

I then patted her on her tiny fragile shoulder and we said our goodbyes.

I thought about her sweet response to my name and her unforgettable face for a few days after.

It lingered with me. Resonating in my spirit.

About a week later, I was in the bathtub, talking to God and listening to worship music.

Yes...this is my best time to talk to God.

It's one of the only times I have to myself and a good place to tuck away from the busyness of the world around me.

I laid back in the tub, dunking my entire head under the water, watching the steam rise up around me.
 My ears were silenced.
I closed my eyes and allowed the world to disappear for those few moments.

I thought of her...Mrs. Joyce.
I saw her sweet face and her blue transparent eyes.
I heard her voice saying, "You are Joy", and I smiled under the water.

Then,
just as if He were standing right in front of me,
God's voice whispered softly in my water covered ears...

"That's what you are to Me. You are my Joy. You have always been my Joy and you always will be. You are Joy."

The tears began to flow and trinkle into the water around me.
They were unstoppable.

I cried with my entire body,
shaking, trembling, and pouring out years and years of pain right there in the bathtub.
I sat in the tub motionless,
crying,
until the water was cold and chilly.
Until, all those years of heaviness and pain left my body.

I've spent my whole life haunted by a name that wasn't meant for me.

That name was "pain".

I was the 8th child born to a very broken family, three months after my Father's vasectomy.
Needless to say, I was quite unexpected.
It was a yours, mine and ours kind of family that screamed for help in every way...
a family that desperately needed God.
Their lives were already spilling over with chaos and plenty of children,
I was the last thing my mother wanted or needed.
She found herself in a desperate place.
She drank herself in a stooper the entire pregnancy for me,
in an attempt to miscarry me.

She told me from the time I could understand words,
that she was miserable her entire pregnancy for me,
and that she cried every day because I was the last thing she wanted at the time.

She told me that I was the reason why she was overweight.
She said she had become so depressed when she had me, that she began having an eating disorder.

All I ever knew, was that I had caused her pain.

Lots and lots of pain.

Maybe those were words she had heard whispered into her own life.
Maybe those were the only words she knew, so they just fell down to me.
Maybe it was the only way she knew how to love.

Whatever the case, those words soaked into me.
It doesn't mean they were true, it's just what I was told.
At the time, I had no other truth offered to me.

Throughout my life, when things would go sour, I blamed myself.
I blamed myself for the pain in all of my relationships.
I closed off from people that I loved, because I thought that if I removed myself from them,
they wouldn't have pain in their life.
I thought I was doing them a favor in some way.

I blamed myself when my marriage went bad.
If only I didn't cause pain, he wouldn't be so angry and miserable all the time.
Maybe he would love me enough to straighten up his life.
Maybe we could finally find happiness.

I blamed myself for my many miscarriages.
If only I didn't cause pain, God would give me more children.

I identified with the story of Jabez in the Bible.
I can laugh as I say this now, but I felt as though he was my brother from another mother.
His mother named him Jabez, meaning "pain",
because she experienced so much pain during his birth.
What a label to carry around? What a name to be called?
Even so...I felt his anguish. I knew his pain. I could relate.

I memorized the Jabez prayer and made it my anthem,
"Oh God, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!
Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will not cause pain."

I prayed with every fiber in me, that He would make my life bring joy to others,
 and not so much pain.

In an attempt to try and fix what I thought I was, I became a perfectionist.
If I were perfect, then I would have no way of causing pain to someone else...
or so I thought.
I obsessed about everything, became an over achiever, and created a fake cold stale world to live in.
It sent me spiraling down a road of misery, including an eating disorder,
the same one that afflicted my mother.
It ripped away my joy.

Oh, on the outside I smiled,
and made it look like I had it all together.
 But on the inside,
I was a big hot emotional mess. A train wreck!
I felt like a failure who just caused pain wherever I went.

I had believed every lie that was spoken over me. Every last one.
I listened to the enemy, the accuser, the puppet master of lies.

And now, today...somewhere deep inside, part of me still believed it.

I knew that I had been redeemed and changed by God when I took Him in as Savior of my life,
but I failed to do one thing.

I failed to let go of that old name tag, the one that the enemy had stuck on me since my conception.
I held on to it. Maybe thinking I deserved it instead of what God had for me.
Maybe, I folded it up and placed it in my back pocket, just in case, down the road,
I would fail God and cause Him pain too.

But how many of you know, that when God takes control of your life...
He tears off that old name tag,
and He gives you a new one!

He gives you the name you were meant to carry all along.
The one He set aside just for you!
One filled with love and with His stamp of grace upon it!

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

God doesn't see the old you, or the old name you used to wear,
He only sees the new you!

The old man, the old name, is gone--VAMOOSE--and new things are happening!

He is the creator of all things new!
It's who He is.
He is newness of life. He is the Redeemer!
He rescues. He saves. He delivers.

When I accepted Him as Lord of my life I was reborn, and I had finally heard the real TRUTH spoken over me. And I needed a new name to go with my new birth.

God changes our name, not because we have changed on the outside,
but because we have changed on the inside.
There is a transformation that happens within us.
He gives us a new name, because our status changes.

Just as a soldier in the army changes rank, going from Private to Corporal.
His status changed, so his name must change.

When we become Christ followers, our status changes.

We are now a part of His Kingdom!
We are heirs of His blessing!

Romans 11:17
"But some of these branches from Abraham's tree-some of the people of Israel-have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God's special olive tree." (NLT)

And one day, one glorious day,
we will wear the name Sergeant First Class, as we live eternally with Him in Heaven!

When you...yes you,
took Jesus Christ as your Savior, something supernatural took place.
There was a shift in your status.
You were made new and renamed by the blood of the Risen Lamb!
You belong to the Father!

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

This isn't something that God has just started doing.

God has been in the name changing business for a long time...

He changed Abram to Abraham, meaning "father of a great multitude".
Abraham became just that, a father of many nations!
God gave him and his decendants His inheritance!
(Genesis 17:5-8, Romans 4:17)

He changed Abram's wife's name Sarai to Sara, meaning "mother of nations".
God showed Sara that her own efforts were in vain, but with God's grace everything is possible.
(Genesis 17:15-16)

He changed Simon to Peter, meaning "the rock".
Jesus said to him, "Upon this rock, I will build my church."
And He did!
(John 1:42, Matthew 16:17-19)

He changed Saul to Paul, meaning "small or humble".
Paul humbled Himself before the Lord, so that God was greater in His life than anything else, and God used Him greatly.
He turned from persecutor to apostle.
He went on to write 2/3 of the New Testament!
(Acts 9:1-6, 10-16)

He changed Jacob to Israel, meaning "having power with God".
Jacob had wrestled with man and with God and had overcome!
God used Him mightily and blessed Him greatly!
(Genesis 35:10, 31:1-32)

He changed my name from Tammy "thought to cause pain", to Tammy JOY!
Joy means "a feeling of great pleasure and happiness, delight, gladness, mirth, something to be rejoiced or celebrated."
God has showed me that I am someone worth celebrating!
He has showed me that through Him and because of His grace,  I am made whole...
in every way!

God is in the name changing business!

He has a new name for you!

He wants to whisper that new name into your heart!

He probably already has!
Maybe you just don't know it,  because you haven't let go of your old name.

If you are reading this right now...
I encourage you today, to let it go!
Don't let one more day go by allowing that name to control or harm you.
Rip that old name tag off. Surrender it to God.
He wants so much for you to know how loved you are,
how great the sound of your name is upon His ears,
 and how adored you are.

His name for you is much sweeter and filled with blessing and freedom!

Not only did I carry the name "pain" on my collar, but I believed that I actually was pain.
As God spoke into my heart with His name for me,
all of that pain began to pour out of me.
All the pain that I thought I caused, I had become,
and just with the whisper of His voice calling me by my new name, it began seaping from me.

As it literally dripped off of me, I felt light and free, almost airy.
I had carried the burden of that name "pain" for so long, that it began to weigh me down.

I am so excited to say, that I am finally free of it!
Free of the weight and the burden of a name that wasn't mine to hold.

I realized that my new name is something I have to conciously decide to take on every day.
I have to choose to let go of the old name, the old me.
The enemy will try to remind me of what I am not,
but God continues to remind me of what I am!

I am His.
I am a new creation with a new name!
He calls me His Beloved.

What name are you holding onto?
What label have you been wearing for way too long?
What name or names have been spoken over you and battered you around your whole life?
What name clouds your hearing to where you can't hear God calling you?

Is it failure?
Is it worthless?
Is it pain?
Is it addict?
Is it burden?
I'm sure the enemy has a list that goes on and on.

Let me let you in on something...
the enemy is a liar!
And he has a sack full of lies for you and for me.
He will either tell you those lies himself,
or use the mouth of someone else to whisper those lies to you.
He wants to shame you.

He wants you to believe his lies so that you will not become what God has called you to be.

But God...
He cannot lie.
He only offers truth.

Numbers 23:19
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

He loves you for who you are!
He can't love you any more or any less than He already does.

He offers everlasting life with His truth and with the name that He has for you.
His name will not shame you, nor make you feel less of who you are.

His name will lift you up.
It will give you purpose. It will give you hope!

His name for you is sweet as honey and brings a smile to His face.

He has it written on the palm of His hand and when He looks upon it,
He smiles and calls you His Beloved.
He marvels in you and celebrates your very creation.

He has called you Redeemed!

His name for you will bring glory to Him.
It will bring peace and joy to you.
It will put praise in your heart and a song on your lips!
You will want nothing else but to worship Him, the very reason we were created.

There is a song by D. J. Butler titled I Will Change Your Name.

I hope these lyrics speak to your heart...

I will change your name
You shall no longer be called
Wounded, outcast, lonely or afraid
I will change your name
Your new name shall be
Confidence, joyfulness, overcoming one
Faithfulness, friend of God
One who seeks My face.

So, I ask you...what's your name?

Seek after God's heart today and find out who you really are.

Allow Jesus, the Name above all names, to speak over you.

Let Him tell you who He says you are!

Don't you hear Him calling you?

Isaiah 51:3
The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD.
Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Victory is sweet!

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”

I write this post,
sitting comfortably on my Dad's plushy beige couch.

I haven't been myself these past few days.

At least that's what my husband keeps telling me.

This first bothered me when I heard him say it,
and I got angry and offended.

Then after marinating on it for a little while,
as I often do...
I realized (painfully) that he was right.

My thoughts seem to be all over the place.

Today makes five days that we have been away from home.

Hurricane Isaac entered the gulf and headed our way,
so we decided to take a few days away to visit my dad and step mom as a nice getaway and to flee the oncoming doom of the storm.

The storm didn't hit us directly, but the winds and rain knocked out our power and it has been out ever since.

No power means no water.

No power and no water makes for a cranky little family,
so we opted to stay at my Dad's until our power is restored.

Which still,
has not happened.

Although I am enjoying the visit with my parents, and they have opened up their home to us as if it were our own...

I am out of my element and feel all discombobulated.

Hence...I'm just not myself.

I even began to make preparations for my own little pity party-party of one,
being that tomorrow is my birthday and due to the storm...
my previous plans have been cancelled, washed out, blown away with the wind...
you get what I'm saying.

So there I was,
ready to stretch out my rubber band on my little pity party hat and tuck it tightly under my chin,
when...

I looked to my right and saw my sweet husband sitting on the side of me.
He glanced at me, smiled and grabbed my hand in his squeezing it tightly.

I exhaled a huge breath of air and thought to myself,

"Oh ye, of little thanks."

Yep. That's me.

I remembered within those few seconds where I was four years ago almost to the exact day.
The. exact. day.

It was August of 2008 and Hurricane Gustav was heading straight for us.

My husband and I had separated just four days before.
Our family was divided and broken.

I decided to grab the kids, a load of food, their baby pictures, some important papers, a weeks worth of clothes, my dog, and my very broken and confused heart and head to my Dad's house to avoid the storm in the gulf, and in my life.

Things were bad, really bad, between my husband and I.

The word hate left my lips way more than the word love did those days.

The day after I arrived at my Dad's house, we packed up and left for Texas to evacuate the storm even further.

The next day, the storm hit...on my birthday.
I was on my own with my three kids,
an entire state away from our home,
and desperate to find some sort of peace in my life.
Looking for a Love that didn't cause pain anymore.

I longed to hear God's voice of direction within the midst of such a huge storm.
Within such a huge mess that had become my life.

It came...
that Voice. that Peace. that Love.

And now here I sit,
four years later,
at my Dad's house,
in the aftermath of a hurricane,
the day before my 40th birthday,
with the man that I love.

Once again He brings me full circle.

Oh how I love this man of mine!
I have so much to be thankful for.
I never imagined I could love him so much.
My companion,
my lover,
my best friend,
my partner,
my husband,
my future.

These days,
I can't stop telling him "I love you" .

And hate,
is just a bad friend who isn't allowed to visit anymore.

After pondering all that we've have been through to get to where we are,
and all the places that we have gone together,

I realized that it was no coincidence that God had me in the same place I was four years ago,
but this time,
sitting beside the man of my dreams.

It was to remind me where He brought me (us) from.

It was to remind me to be thankful even in the midst of a storm.

To truly see the blessings around me in spite of the winds that blow from time to time.

To realize what really matters.
To see and appreciate, with an open heart,
the little things,
that are actually BIG things.

I've learned that
God will often bring us to the ruins, so that we can stand in the rubble,
smell the dust around our feet,
and realize as we are standing there...
that we are doing just that,
standing there.

And as we are standing in the ruins, that we once knelt down in at our weakest moments,
we can then see from a higher view,
where He planned on taking us in the first place...

into victory.

I'm thankful today to stand in the ruins of what used to be,
and be able to see now where He has brought me from and intended to bring me all along.

Take it from me...
Victory is sweet!

Happy day before my Birthday to me!!

God is good...oh so good,
and He is so good to me!!

Psalm 34:8
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Do it afraid.

Psalm 135:1-7

Praise the LORD.
Praise the name of the LORD;
praise him, you servants of the LORD,
you who minister in the house of the LORD,
in the courts of the house of our God.

  Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant.
For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own,
Israel to be his treasured possession.

I know that the LORD is great,
that our Lord is greater than all gods.
The LORD does whatever pleases him,
in the heavens and on the earth,
in the seas and all their depths.
He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
he sends lightning with the rain
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

I've been pregnant for over a year.

Now before you go gasping and freaking out on me, let me explain.

I'm not with child in the physical sense, but in the spiritual sense.

The thing is, like the television series...

I didn't know I was pregnant!!

I've been having a reocurring dream over the past year that I was pregnant.

In my dream, this baby was big...huge!

I gained 70 pounds for my first child.
I was far from a tiny cute pregnant woman with a volleyball sized belly.

I was much more like Shamoo the whale...but more bloated.

In my dreams of being pregnant...I was even bigger than that!!

I remember about six months ago, when our lives were changing all around us, I received a call from my sister.

She told me that she had a dream that I was pregnant.
She explained how in the dream I was covering my belly with a blanket.

I giggled and asked if I was embarassed and maybe trying to hide the pregnancy.

She began to explain that God had revealed to her what the blanket was about.

It was His covering.
As long as I covered my pregnancy under that blanket, then it was safe from harm.

She told me in urgency...
"Don't come out from underneath Him.  Stay as close to Him as you can.  You are going to birth something huge and He will keep you protected as long as you stay underneath His covering."

She had no idea at the time, that I had been dreaming that I was pregnant.

I told her what I had been dreaming about, and we both cried and praised God together for His revelation.

I must admit,
I was a little afraid at the time...
not knowing just what I would be giving birth to.

What was all of this about?

I continued to dream.

I continued to be pregnant in those dreams.

Then, a few weeks ago, the labor pains began.

I wrote my testimony on my blog.

It was something God had been placing on my heart to do for a while.
I struggled with it.
It was painful and hard, but I knew it was time to write it during this season of my life.
He showed me very loudly that I needed to share it.

God has done great things since I wrote that blog.
He has begun to plant an urgency in my heart to share it over and over again.

One week after I wrote it,
I began to dream that I was holding a baby in my arms.
I've dreamed it several times over the past few weeks.
I've never seen the baby's face, because the baby has always been wrapped tightly in a blanket.

Fear returned.
I began to question God.

What's going on?
 What's happening?
I'm not sure I'm ready for what is about to happen Lord.
What if I mess up because I don't know what I'm doing?
Are you sure?

I attended our annual Joie de Vivre women's conference at our church this past weekend.
I prayed during the worship service before the speaker began.
I knew what God was placing on my heart, and I asked Him to reveal Himself to me during the message.

I pleaded with Him...
"Speak to my heart Lord.  Remove all doubt from my mind and give me a revelation that this is from You. Speak to me audibly if You have to."

We had the privilige of hearing Charlotte Gambill preach a powerful message.

Her message was about the six women who were involved with the early life of Moses.

The message was titled, "Push".

She explained how these six women, the midwives, the mothers, the sister, the delivererers to the deliverer...

were gathered together in time to birth something God had placed within Moses' mother.

He had a plan to deliver His people,
and all six of them played a part in that delivery.

She explained the difficulty and fear of birth,
and the encouragement those women brought to bring forth the plan of God.

Needless to say,
I was a complete mess!!

It's a good thing that I sat in the very last row of the auditorium,
because I may have been removed from the room otherwise.

My heart was heavy and full and excited and fearful all at the same time.
I was reminded of the women God had placed in my life just a few short months before, that had encouraged me just a few days before the conference to share my story.

We had gathered for lunch one day.
I told them that some friends of ours had invited me and my family to share my story at their church.
I expressed my fear and reservation to them.
They rallied around me with their love and encouragement, pushing me to move forward into the next season God had prepared for me.

One of them spoke sweetly to me, but with urgency,

"Just do it.  Do it scared and each time will be easier."

As I sat in that back row, eyes flowing with tears, doubtful fear reentered my mind.

I cried to the Lord quietly in my seat,
"I know this is what You want.  I know this is You speaking to me. It's been You all along.  These dreams were You...all You.  But, I'm afraid God.  How do I do this if I am afraid?"

The next words she spoke would awaken my spirit...

"Do it afraid.  Things don't work according to our limitations, but His ability."

John 10:27
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

Pregnancy can be uncomfortable, and even scarey sometimes.
The delivery can be filled with some very painful moments.
But the delivery always brings forth LIFE.
And most of the time, that LIFE comes out screaming and crying,
but it's still LIFE!
God breathed LIFE.
And after all of the crying is done, and you hold that life in your arms...
the sweet aroma of that birth tickles your nose,
and He has you right where He wants you.

You are in His love embrace!

Then you realize it was all worth it...each pain, each tear that fell, all the fear, each agonizing push!

Because you are left,
holding LIFE in your hands!

Pure sweet life!

He is that life!!

And for that reason...

I will do it afraid.

Phillippians 4:13
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

I sat nestled in my recliner early this morning with a warm cup of coffee in hand.

I smiled as I relived the past few days and the words God had spoken into my life.

Oh the sweetness He brings to me in His covering!

I opened my laptop and read a blog I read a few times a week.

He used her words to speak life to me once again...

So I’m asking and trusting Him for the courage to do it afraid, to seek the healing in the heartache, to show me parts of myself I’ve lost, and to reveal parts of Himself I’ve never seen.

What is God urging you to do today?
I encourage you...to do it afraid.
Allow God to bring forth His life in you!!

Across the ocean blue.

Psalm 104:31

“May the glory of the Lord endure forever, may the Lord rejoice in His works.”

God has been speaking to my heart for the past few weeks about resharing something.

I contemplated, and argued, and doubted what to do, and if it was a story that just needed to be told once.

Oh, how the enemy was busy filling my head with unbelief.

I've watched God unfold in our lives over the past few months bringing forth new life and new miracles by the day.

My soul trembles in awe as I have seen God's sovereign hand move and flow in our hearts bringing resurrection life to a family in need.

And yet,
I fear to retell a story of resurrection.

Today...
I tell the story from eyes renewed and a faith flowing from a God-given resurrection.

I'd grown up knowing God my entire life and depending on Him for my everything.

I was in my thirties and loving Him with all of my heart,
or so I thought.

On the outside, I was the loving wife, devoted mom, good friend to all, church goer and faith-filled Christian.

On the inside, I was bitter, angry, hurt, and dying.

I had learned early on how to cover up pain and wear the mask of "happy" for all to see.

A characteristic that I was forced to take with a smile.

A role that I had grown very good at playing.

My anger and bitterness stemmed from the hurt I had endured from a few women in my life that had "done me wrong"  so to speak.

My mother.
A close friend.
A church leader.

They hurt me, hurt my children, hurt my family.

I was hurt and I backed up that hurt with my Christian faith.

I used it as an excuse to harbor the anger and bitterness.

It grew weeds on top of weeds of unforgiveness.

I had all the right things to say to God,

"But you know what they did to me."

"You know what they did to my child, to my family."
"You know they are wrong."

"You know how hurt I am."

"You don't want me to be hurt again, do you God?"

"You know how hard it would be for me to forgive them. I'm just not ready for that."

"You know I'm the faithful one God, not them."

I even began walking around with a "better than them" attitude, because I was the "good Christian" who had been hurt by the " bad people", the "bad Christians".

I held on to that unforgiveness and used it whenever I could to plead my case with God.

Little did I know, that it was hurting my walk with Him,

and that I was dying on the inside.

I continued on with my smile and my secrets.

Believing that God would "understand" and give me a pardon.

I mean...
I did all the right things in my life.
Made all the right decisions.
Walked the perfect line.
Said all the right words.
Went to church.
Listened to Christian music.
Taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
I even read my bible each day.

I played the part like it was made just for me.
I thought, on several occasions, that I would forgive them "tomorrow" or "down the road" or "if they beg for my forgiveness"  or "if they admit they were wrong"  or  " if they make things right with me".

And one day, when they would come running to me, I would hand them my gift of "forgiveness".

I used my unforgiveness towards them as a weapon of control over them, over the hurt they caused, because I was determined, that they "weren't going to get the best of me!"

Maybe, I thought,
that if I forgave them, it would somehow make what they did to me okay.

Surely God would give me the grace I needed.
Surely He knew where I was coming from.
I had slowly begun to take advantage of His gift of grace.

When I was 36,
I began to have some female issues and after months of pain and very little sleep, I decided, with my doctor and husband, that it was time to have a hysterectomy.

It was the night before the surgery and I laid down to try and get a good night's sleep before surgery the next morning.

I closed my eyes, and fell fast asleep.

That night, I had a dream.

In the dream I saw one of the women that had hurt me and my family.

She was sobbing and crying and holding her face within the palms of her hands.

I could feel her sorrow.

Every aching ounce of it.

She too was hurting from the situation that had happened between us.

And I could feel that hurt.

I wanted to wake up and escape the pain, but I couldn't.

I had to endure it.

All of it.

Every tear that fell and every wretching pain in her heart.

Before me, sat a broken woman.

I began to sob and ache with her, attempting to reach out my hand and comfort her.

But, I couldn't.

I had to just sit back and watch, and feel, and hurt right along with her.

My insides aching with despair for her.

I even felt the physical pain of her broken heart.

As I sat watching and crying, compassion began to fill my heart, removing the anger, the resentment, and the unforgiveness.

I awoke the next morning, with wet cheeks.

As my eyes opened, I saw the inside of my heart and all of the unforgiveness that filled it.

It was black and decayed looking.

The unforgiveness was stealing the life from me.
I was dying a spiritual death.

I then realized it was the morning of the surgery and I thought to myself,

"I'm having major surgery today.  What if I die during surgery and go to meet God today with all of this unforgiveness on my heart?"

I was reminded of the scripture,

Matthew 6:15
But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

I knew at that moment, that my unforgiveness would possibly separate me from God.

I climbed out of bed, and got on my knees on the side of my bed, something I don't think I have ever done in my lifetime...get on my knees before God.

I pleaded for His forgiveness and handed over the hurt feelings that had been buried in my heart for so long.

I lay at His feet each woman that hurt me, and prayed that God would forgive me for having such ill thoughts about His daughters.  I prayed that God would only allow me to see the good in them.  I prayed that He would replace those hurt feelings I had towards them, with compassion and  love for each of them.

I prayed for healing in my relationships with them.
I prayed that He would remove everything from my heart that did not bring Him Glory.
I knew in that moment that God had forgiven me and that He had uprooted those weeds of bitterness and unforgiveness.
I knew I was free from the bondage the unforgiveness had on my life and heart.

Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

I cleaned my face and began to get ready to leave for the hospital.

Later that morning, I had my surgery.
Everything went fine and I was wheeled into my room to get some needed rest.

Not long after being in my room, I realized that I was in an excrutiating pain.
It seemed unnormal, so I allerted my nurse.

The nurse came in and told me that she would contact the doctor and see if there was anything else she could give me for pain.

Moments later she came in with a syringe of pain medicine.

My dad and step-mother were in the room with me and opted to leave because of the pain I was in.  They thought I had too much company and needed some time to rest.

My dad kissed me on the cheek, my step-mother placed a wooden cross in my hand, squeezed it and said "I love you."

I smiled, said my I love yous and squeezed that little wooden cross in the palm of my hand.

That was the last thing I remember,
before waking up to a room filled with nurses and doctors standing at the foot and side of my bed.

My husband was holding my hand and he had tears running down his face.

Unbeknowngst to me...

the second shot of pain medicine had stopped my heart.

I died in that hospital room just moments after my father and step-mother left.

My husband and daughter were in the room with me at the time.

They had decided to go downstairs to get something to eat now that I was sleeping.

My husband grabbed my hand and realized that I was cold to the touch.

He then noticed my skin was turning a gray-blue right in front of him.

My daughter ran to get a nurse and they immediately came into my room to begin to try to revive me.

My body lay lifeless and without a beating heart for 8 minutes.

On the outside of the door,
a hospital counselor met my husband and daughter to prepare them for the worst.

She began to prepare my daughter to be motherless, my husband to be widowed, explaining that there would need to be arrangements made and that she could get someone to help make those arrangements.

Immediately my daughter shouted to her,
"No!  She is not dead!  God is going to bring her back to life! I need her!  We need her!"

My daughter then began to pray with her dad, and the nurse in the hallway for God to bring me back to life.

A few minutes later,
the nurse appeared from inside my room and told them that my heart had began to beat again.

Resurrection life filled that hospital room.

And as I type this,
my hands are shaking with a feeling that I can't explain or put words to.

I have no memory of those 8 minutes, nor did I see anything.

If I had to explain it...
I would say that it was 8 minutes of dark nothing.

Dark. Nothing.

When I came to and realized what had happened to me, I was reminded of my dream and how I had just asked God that morning to forgive me for my unforgiveness.

God showed me that the dark nothing that I experienced was what my heart looked like on the inside.

The blackness of unforgiveness had taken over my heart, and there was nothing in it but that.

I can't explain what happened in that room,

but like the blind man said when asked if the Messiah had healed him...

I once was blind, but now I see!

I once was dead, but now I'm alive!

The tears roll down my cheeks as I attempt to write this story and I am still in awe of what God has done in my life and heart.

I can't explain the newness of life that He has shown me, what He has revealed and is continuing to reveal through that incident.

Well today I found myself
After searching all these years
And the man that I saw
He wasn't at all who I thought he'd be

I was lost when you found me here
And I was broken beyond repair
Then You came along
And You sang Your song over me

It feels like I'm born again
It feels like I'm living
For the very first time
For the very first time in my life

Make a promise to me now
Reassure my heart somehow
That the love that I feel
Is so much more real than anything

It feels like I'm born again
It feels like I'm living
For the very first time
For the very first time

~~Born Again lyrics by Third Day

This story has always been hard for me to talk about, without having feelings of anxiety and fear.

But, I believe that has been the devil's attempt to keep me quiet.

To hush out the praises that God needs to hear.

To put to rest a story that needs to be told.

But not anymore!

My daughter just came home from a trip to Romania.

Her and her fellow XMC classmates have been there ministering for two weeks.

She came home yesterday to spend the day with us, and her face was all aglow to tell us what God had done in Romania, across the ocean blue.

Tears poured down my face as she told the story of an elderly woman she had the opportunity to witness to.

She explained how the woman did not know English and that there was a translator helping them to better communicate with eachother.

The little elderly woman, no taller than my nine year old son she explains, had a son that had a heart condition at a very young age.

She collapsed on the floor in despair as she told my daughter and a handful of other students that she was afraid that he was going to die and that she would lose her son.

She felt hopeless and out of answers.
She felt that death was looming all around her and her son.

Not knowing exactly what to tell her, Amber and the others stooped down on the floor with her and comforted her with laying hands and prayers of healing and hope.

As they began to exit her home,
Amber was reminded of what happened to me, to her...

Amber had witnessed me dying before her eyes just a few years before, and had never before been able to talk about it to anyone.

For her it represented the day her mom died and the pain she felt on that day.

Just nights before, in a little room in the XMC boarding house in Romania, she shared that story with a fellow student.

The student encouraged her to tell that story to someone.

To tell of God's resurrection power!

How He brings life from death!

Amber stopped as she got to the doorway to leave that little elderly woman's house, and told her leader that she had something else she needed to tell her.

She began to tell her what had happened in that hospital room a few years ago, and how God had brought resurrection life into her mother's dead body and heart.

"If He can do that for my mom who was dead," she told her, "surely He can do that for your son who is still alive."

The little woman began to jump up and down and shout praises unto God,  running all around her house rejoicing.

She told them that she had lost her joy years ago,
and that she had gotten it back in that very moment.

She had found again, her hope in Jesus.

In that moment, at my kitchen table,  as my daughter told me the story,  I too found hope again.

If God can take that moment in my life and use it for His gain,
even across the ocean blue in Romania,

what can He do here?

What else can He accomplish through sharing what He did that day?

Revelation 12:11
"And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death."

What can He do if I continue to share His resurrection power with others?

Or better yet...what can He do with your story if you tell it?

What if He were to use your story to benefit someone else?

to bring hope.
to bring joy.
to bring healing.
to bring love.
to bring salvation.
to bring resurrection!

What if through the retelling of your story--He would bring hope back to you!

I realized through that experience a few years back, that God is not interested in the pretty things on the outside that we offer to Him.

He is interested in the gifts of the heart that we offer to Him.

He wanted all of me...even my unforgiveness, bitterness, and hurt.

He wanted the messy stuff, so He could give me His good stuff!

Do I still have issues with unforgiveness at times?

Of course I do.

But, I am much quicker to lay it down at His feet.

Matthew 18:21-22
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times

I learned that if I am holding onto unforgiveness with all that I have,
there is no room for me to grab onto Jesus.

Therefore, I will not be able to fully embrace Him.
I can't fully worship Him.
I will not be able to recieve what He has for me,
and what He is so eager to share with me.

A couple of weeks after I left the hospital, I returned to visit with the nurses that had worked to revive me and that had taken care of me while I was there.

As I walked in, their eyes grew large.

They were still shocked and surprised that I was alive and walking.

The head nurse administrator hugged me and told me,

"I've been a nurse for 27 years.  I know what death looks like. You were gray. You were gone. You were dead! There is no other way to say it.  You were dead!  And now you stand here with me, strong and alive!  I still can't wrap my mind around it."

I don't know where you are today.
What pain you have gone through.
It may look gray.
All your hope is gone.
You may have lost your joy.
Your situation may look like it is dead, without any life at all.
Everything around you may be telling you to give up, make arrangements to bury what is already dead.

But, God wants to bring you to a resurrection!

He wants to fill you with His LIFE!

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,"

As I get into bed each night, I see that little wooden cross that I clinched in my hand that day in the hospital, sitting on my night stand.

It's a reminder for me of that day and what God did in that hospital room,
and it also reminds me to continue to cling to Him with all that I have.

To not ever forget the sacrifice He made on the cross to give me forgiveness of my sins.

 I urge you...

wherever you are, wherever you have lost your hope,

cling to the cross that is Jesus and allow Him to give you a brand new heart!

Allow Him to bring you to that place of resurrection!

Mary and Martha wanted healing for Lazarus, but Jesus wanted a resurrection!
~~Heidi Reiszner

Put your hope in Him!

If He can do it for a little old lady across the ocean blue, for a blind man, for my daughter, for my family, for Lazarus, for countless others, for me...
surely He will do it for you!

Romans 2:11
For there is no partiality with God.

Psalm 95:1-6

Come, let's shout praises to God, raise the roof for the Rock who saved us!
Let's march into his presence singing praises,
lifting the rafters with our hymns!
3-5 And why? Because God is the best,
High King over all the gods.
In one hand he holds deep caves and caverns,
in the other hand grasps the high mountains.
He made Ocean—he owns it!
His hands sculpted Earth!
6-7 So come, let us worship: bow before him,
on your knees before God, who made us!
Oh yes, he's our God,
and we're the people he pastures, the flock he feeds.
